European Year of the persons with dissability

PRESENTATION

Disabled women currently account for 10% of all women. Approximately 300 million women suffer from some kind of disability or other, often finding themselves subjected to discrimination in diverse fields.

The international community recently recognised the existing twofold discrimination against disabled women and the numerous obstacles that hinder them from achieving life objectives that are considered essential.

This is why, coinciding whit the European Year of People with Disabilities 2003 and International Women's Day, the Valencia Regional Government Ministry of Welfare, together with the Spanish Ministry of Work and Social Affairs, through the Institute of Migration and Social Services and the Spanish Women's Institute, have decided to promote the staging of this 1st International Women and Disability Congress in the city of Valencia from 27th February to 1st March 2003.

Given the content of the Congress, the fact that it is a premiere event, and its expected international impact, the initiative is to participate in the actions being staged nation-wide during the European Year of People with Disabilities. The Conference is backed by diverse national, regional and local authorities, and by associations within the movement through the CERMI (the Spanixh Committee of Representatives of Persons with Disabilities).

The Conference will deal with different aspects related to the aim of improving the quality of life of women affected by some kind of disability and possible ways of fomenting active participation, facilitating their integration into our society and eradicating discriminatory social stereotypes.
